ALGONA — The fourth-ranked (Class 1A) Bishop Garrigan boys used their size and strength to power past St. Edmond here Tuesday night in a district semifinal, 76-47.

The Golden Bears (20-2 overall) advance to meet Harris-Lake Park in Pocahontas on Thursday for the District 2 title. Harris-Lake Park (11-10) knocked off Newell-Fonda last night, 79-69.

Angelo Winkel scored a game-high 21 points with John Joyce adding 20 and Cade Winkel 15 for Garrigan, which also won the regular season opener over the Gaels (8-14).

“We played tough there for a while, but their size caught up to us,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “We were doubling low (against Angelo Winkel), and Joyce and (Cameron) Baade hit some big shots that forced us to spread out.”

Quinten McCarville led St. Edmond with 14 points as Connor Bocken added 10. Hayden Mayer scored six and both Anthony Lacina and Cael Kolacia chipped in five.

“I’ve got to give our guys credit because we didn’t back down,” Kochendorfer said. “We played them tough and made them work for everything.”

Bishop Garrigan earned a win over the Gaels in a district final a year ago on its way to competing at state. They led 18-8 after the first and by 10 at halftime, increasing the advantage to 58-31 after the third quarter.

Joyce scored 12 of his 20 in the first half for the Golden Bears.

The contest marked the final game in a St. Edmond uniform for Bocken, Charlie Shelly, Jerris Duncan, Jed Tracy, Jackson Bemrich and Ethan Lursen.

“I really appreciate everything the seniors gave us over these past four years,” Kochendorfer said. “We talked about it in the locker room and it’s always tough this time of the year when it’s that last one.”
