WORTHINGTON -- When Jazmin Voehl transferred from Mitchell (S.D.) Technical Institute to Minnesota West last fall a few weeks into the school year, the former Harris-Lake Park High athlete decided to resume her basketball career.

“It’s been awesome,” said Voehl. “I love it.”

So do fans of the West Lady Jays.

Voehl, a 6-foot forward who became eligible to play a few weeks ago, scored 19 points and made a clutch free throw in the waning moments as Minnesota West defeated the Dordt College junior varsity 72-70 Wednesday night at the Health and Wellness Center.

Sophomore Emily Shaffer of Worthington and freshman Alanna Goetzinger of Chatfield scored 10 points apiece as the Lady Jays won for the eighth time in nine games and improved to 9-7 on the season.

“We have a lot of good people on this team. I’m proud of everybody,” said Voehl, who grew up in Sioux Valley Township near Lakefield. “At the beginning of the year we didn’t really know each other and hadn’t played together, but now we’re definitely putting the glue together, and that’s going to really help.”

The Lady Jays are making much progress and Voehl, who displayed an excellent shooting touch and nice moves around the hoop, is a big part of it.

“She makes a huge difference for us,” said Lady Jays’ coach Rosalie Hayenga-Hostikka. “We’ve been kind of licking our chops to get her into the lineup. She really had a great game tonight.”

Minnesota West never trailed after Voehl scored 30 seconds into the game. She finished 6-for-9 from both the field and the line and also grabbed eight rebounds.

Two 3-pointers from Emily Wilke, plus treys from Lexie Ramsey and Grace Suttle helped West build an eight-point halftime lead. The advantage became 13 early in the third quarter as Voehl canned a 3-pointer, Shaffer scored on the break and Goetzinger contributed back-to-back hoops thanks to assists from both Voehl and Ramsey.

Though Dordt shaved the deficit to one in the waning moments, the Defenders from Sioux Center, Iowa, came up short when a potential game-tying shot missed the mark in the final seconds.

Two months ago, Dordt defeated the Lady Jays by 10 points after leading 22-2 early on.

“It’s kind of a measuring stick to see if we’ve improved and I like to think we have,” said Hayenga-Hostikka. “We didn’t have a ton of poise down the stretch, but overall it was a great team effort. We had a lot of people get some minutes and contribute, and that’s always good. ”

For Dordt (6-5), former Russell-Tyler-Ruthton star Brooke Thomsen scored 12 points, including two 3-pointers.

“I would say (the Lady Jays) played a lot better than the last time,” Thomsen. “They’re really good competitors. It was just a good game.”

Shaffer finished with six rebounds and four assists, while Ramsey had nine points and five dimes.

Voehl said the Lady Jays hope to continue their winning ways.

“We started sort of at the bottom and now we’re working our way to the top,” she said.

Minnesota West travels to Anoka-Ramsey on Sunday afternoon and returns home on Jan. 22 to take on Ridgewater College.
